Students

Student training is one of three cores of the CSULB BUILD program. Its training programs provide our diverse CSULB students research training, support, and resources necessary to successfully apply to Ph.D. programs in health-related research fields and include students from four participating colleges: Engineering (COE), Health and Human Services (CHHS), Liberal Arts (CLA), and Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM). During Phase I, the student training core implemented a 1-year Associates Program for lower-division students, a 2-year Scholars Program for juniors, and a 1-year Fellows Program for graduating seniors. The Associates Program offered introductory research experiences for students and served as a pipeline for the upper-division programs. In BUILD Phase II the Associates Program was adapted as the UROP Health Research Peer Group offered through the Office of Undergraduate Research Services (OURS).  Upon the completion of the NIH-funded BUILD awards, the Scholars and Fellows programs were institutionalized in OURS with a campus commitment to support 20 trainees each year for at least the subsequent decade. Over the award period, the CSULB BUILD Student Training Programs supported over 400 undergraduate students. BUILD is very proud of our trainees’ achievements in the pursuit of their academic and career goals.
