Master of Science in School Counseling

The Master of Science Degree in School Counseling is a 60-66 unit program. Graduates of the program are typically employed in K-12 education to support the academic, social/emotional, and career readiness needs of all students by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. Program candidates concurrently meet requirements for the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential required for persons employed as school counselors in public schools.   • COUN 510 - Law and Ethics for Counselors (3 units)
  • COUN 513 - Introduction to Clinical Interviewing (3 units)
  • COUN 515 - Counseling Theories (3 units)
  • COUN 555 - Cross-Cultural Counseling (3 units)
  • COUN 602- College Counseling for Equity and Access in K-12 Schools (3 units)
  • COUN 604- Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for School Counselors (3 units)
  • COUN 605- Mental Health and Crisis Response in Schools (3 units)
  • COUN 606 - School Counseling Curriculum and Instructional Design (3 units)
  • COUN 607 - School Counseling Practicum (3 Units)
  • COUN 638 - Group Counseling (3 units)
  • COUN 643A - Counseling Field Work (School Counseling) (3 units)
  • COUN 644A - Advanced Counseling Field Work (Advanced School Counseling) (3 units)
  • COUN 695C - Integrative Seminar in Professional School Counseling (3 units)
  • EDP 400 - Introduction to Educational Research (3 units)
  • EDP 520 - Quantitative Research Methods in Education (3 units)
  • EDP 536 - Collaborative Consultation in the Schools (3 units)
  • EDP 596 - Program Evaluation in Education (3 units)
  • EDP 604 - Seminar in Human Development (3 units)
  • EDP 698 - Thesis (3 units) (must take 6 units) or comprehensive examination.

 

The following are required for admission to the program:

  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in a behavioral science, education, or related field.
  • Minimum 2.85 overall grade point average in last degree (not credential or certificate) earned from an accredited institution of higher education.

Application

 

Applicants use Cal State Apply to file all application materials before the deadline. Deadlines and details about the Program Materials (e.g. statement of purpose prompt, recommendation prompts) may be found in the Application Process section of the College of Education Graduate Studies Office website. Please contact the College of Education Graduate Studies Office if you have questions. Submit one set of official transcripts from each college or university that you have attended. This includes all community college(s) attended, bachelor’s degree(s) coursework, and all post-baccalaureate or extension coursework. This set of transcripts will be used to determine grade point average eligibility. Failure to submit transcripts in a timely manner will result in a delayed review of the application. After an initial review, select applicants are invited for an interview with program faculty.

 

Advancement to Candidacy - Clear Admission

Students should advance to candidacy as early as possible. For advancement to candidacy (Clear Admission status), students must:

 

  1. Complete COUN 506, COUN 510, COUN 515, EDP 400.
  2. Maintain a 3.0 grade point average in all course work.
  3. Resolve all incomplete grades.
