NAACP Freedom Fund Gala Recap

A night full of culture, liveliness, and connection; those are the words that best describe the NAACP Gala. Being surrounded by success and accomplished individuals, especially those who resemble you, brings a feeling of hope, inspiration, and pride. As a freshman jumpstarting my passion in journalism, that night left a permanent mark on me. It gave me a glimpse into the kind of change I can make, both in my life and in the lives of others. 

As I left the Gala, I realized how important it is to use your voice. “Voice” can mean expressing your personal beliefs and thoughts or being a beacon of social influence and change. At the Gala, I saw how meaningful it is to connect with others by simply sharing who you are. Allowing people to witness the person I am through my voice helped me understand the power of connection, and how one day, I could be that accomplished individual who inspires someone younger to believe in their passion. A simple handshake or “Hello, my name is...” can be the first step toward opening doors to success. 

I also appreciated the passion that filled the room. It was clear that change was desired, change that would create abundant opportunities for everyone, especially people of color. Watching scholarship recipients smile with pride as the crowd roared in celebration of their accomplishments filled me with empowerment. 

The support in the room was another inspiring part of the Gala. Everyone cheered loudly for one another. Those around me enthusiastically introduced me to people who could help me grow my passion. Leaving the Gala with new contacts and meaningful conversations gave me an exhilarating and fulfilling experience. 

Witnessing the NAACP Gala affirmed their mission: uplifting our community, empowering the youth, and strengthening the fight for equality. Through this event, the NAACP honored the past and invested in a brighter future. I look forward to seeing the change they continue to create. I was honored to be in an environment that symbolized transformation, optimism, and support.
