Daily 49er Honored with 20 Statewide Awards
The Daily 49er, California State University Long Beach’s (CSULB) student-run newspaper was honored with 20 awards at the recent California College Media Association awards banquet. The awards annually honor the winners of the association’s media contest which is open to two- and four-year colleges and universities across the state.
"It is gratifying to know that all the hours of not sleeping, all the cups of coffee and all the food that is way too bad for us have contributed to a newspaper that we are all really proud of and that is considered one of the best in the state," Editor-in-Chief Greg Diaz said. "It really speaks to the dedication of the entire Daily 49er staff and our tremendous faculty advisors."
The Daily 49er received the top honor in the category of Breaking News Story with students Yasmin Cortez, Miranda Andrade-Ceja, Kevin Flores and Amy Patton being honored for their work covering the tragedy surrounding Nohemi Gonzalez, a CSULB student who was the only American killed in the November 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. The paper also took home the top honor in the Arts and Entertainment story category. Additionally, the Daily 49er finished in second place overall in the Best Daily Newspaper category with the remaining awards ranging from second place to honorable mention.
At the same event, Barbara Kingsley-Wilson, the editorial advisor for the Daily 49er, was named Educator of the Year by the California Journalism and Media Affiliates, a statewide consortium of scholastic, collegiate and professional journalism organizations. This marks the second time in the past four years that an educator affiliated with the Daily 49er earned that award as Gary Metzker, who serves as the design advisor for the Daily 49er, received the honor in 2013.
