Assistant Professor Andrea Balbas, a geologist at CSULB, joined other scientists aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilis to survey underwater seamounts in the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii. According to the Hawaii online publication, Big Island Now, researchers made 13 dives to depths up to 9600 feet. Dr. Balbas' research includes the dating of rocks from the ancient undersea volcanos to better understand the movement of the Pacific Plate over millions of years.
