Speek: Giving People a Voice Through Eye-Gaze Glasses
For millions of individuals with severe speech and motor impairments, communication is a daily barrier. Speek is redefining assistive communication through wearable technology, developing a lightweight, hands-free Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device designed as glasses. By utilizing intuitive eye-gaze selection technology paired with forward-facing speakers, Speek empowers users to express themselves naturally, bridging the gap between thought and speech.
Our journey began at CSULB’s Apostle Incubator and the Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, culminating in a 1st-place win at the Sunstone Innovation Challenge. That validation was a major catalyst for us.
Since the competition, we’ve shifted our focus from early-stage concept to hands-on prototyping and product development. We chose to pursue Speek because we believe communication is a fundamental human right, not a logistical hurdle. Seeing firsthand the limitations of traditional, clunky AAC devices drove us to build something truly empowering and accessible. Looking ahead, our next steps include refining our functional prototype, preparing for upcoming pitch competitions and grants, and moving closer to bringing this technology into the hands of those who need it most.
