Remembering Steve Hubbert

During this season of giving, we recognize a man who gave an immense amount of energy and support to our department and countless alumni. Steve Hubbert served as a faculty and staff member in the Film & Electronic Arts Department for nearly 40 years. He had a generosity and warmth experienced by all who came to know him. As a staff member Steve served as FEA’s production technician working with students on thousands of films spanning his nearly four decades in the department. Many alums kept in touch with Steve upon graduating from the department and recognized the tireless dedication Steve had toward their success as filmmakers.

Former Film & Electronic Arts Department Chair, Jerry Mosher recalls Steve coming in on his day off to help students with the inevitable problems that arise while producing a film for the first time, opening doors on campus, or helping with paperwork, he was always willing to lend a helping hand to ensure their success. “Steve never forgot what it was like to be a beginner learning a complex craft, and he wanted to help every student get their film made and make it better. In return, students never forgot Steve.”

Steve retired from the department in 2019, his family, friends, and colleagues were heartbroken as Steve later passed in 2022. In honor of Steve and the impact he made in our department, the Film & Electronic Arts Department is fundraising to establish an endowed scholarship in Steve’s name. With this endowed scholarship, Steve’s legacy will live on and support countless generations of future filmmakers at CSULB.
