The Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival recently hosted their 41st film festival. Documentary Student, Sungbin Moon, was a recipient of the Linda Mabalot New Visions Award for their documentary "After The Storm". Moon worked on their documentary as part of their CINE-382 class with Professor Helen Hood Scheer. The story was personal to the filmmaker as it was about their relationship with their mother and their traumatic past. Here's what the director has said about their recent win:

Winning the New Visions Award at LAAPFF was truly unexpected and deeply meaningful to me. The film is a very personal story about my relationship with my mom, and I honestly wasn’t sure how it would resonate with others. Since I couldn’t film her directly, I challenged myself to explore more creative and metaphorical visual language to represent that distance and emotional complexity.
Through the process, I’ve learned that vulnerability is one of the most powerful tools I have as a filmmaker. Telling a deeply personal story helped me connect with audiences in ways I didn’t anticipate. And it reminded me how universal emotional honesty can be.
