Job Summary
The Chief Curator curates and manages the implementation of visitor centered collections-based and loan exhibitions and related interpretive materials, long-range plans exhibitions, coordinates artist contracts and agreements, invites and oversees guest curators, and collaboratively leads the exhibitions team. A scholar and skilled project manager, the Chief Curator is a primary creative leader within the Museum as part of a team working under the supervision of the Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collections-based curatorial research and exhibitions curation
  • Exhibition planning, logistics coordination, project management, and implementation oversight
  • Coordination and oversight of guest curators and support staff
  • Grant writing and development activities
  • Liaise with community networks, conferences, publications, relationship building

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Record of professional behaviors influenced by engagement with diverse perspectives, attitudes, and practices. Advanced knowledge of museum curating, collection care, research, and collections development. Demonstrable excellent leadership, supervisory, planning, collaboration, and organizational skills. Exceptional communication (including oral, inter-personal, writing, and editing), negotiation, and problem-solving skills. Research skills essential, including ability to access on-line resources and use standard library references. Strong administrative, fiscal, and staff supervisory skills, with a clear record of leading and managing museum projects, including exhibitions. Must exercise consultative peer-to-peer project leadership of the Exhibitions team. Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply curatorial expertise to the exhibition program including pertinent policies, procedures, and regulation. Knowledge and understanding of museum ethics and principles, especially about issues of provenance, accessioning, and deaccessioning. Must understand relevant regulations including, but not limited to, NAGPRA, Nazi-era looted art, and AAM and ICOM guidelines and best practices. Follows all University policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Contributes to a positive university experience for each student and assists in achieving the university's commitment to a vision of excellence. Demonstrable consultative skills in working with internal and external community groups. Ability to understand exhibition problems from a broad, interactive perspective and discern applicable underlying principles to conceive of and develop strategic solution. Experience with the national circulation of traveling exhibitions preferred (including background in preparing contracts, loan forms, memoranda of understanding, letters of agreement and other related correspondence). Ability to learn and follow campus practices and procedures. Excellent organizational skills required in order to handle several projects simultaneously and meet pressing deadlines.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and three years of related experience required. CA Driver's License required.

Preferred Requirements: Master of Arts or PhD degree in museum studies, art history, studio art, or visual culture studies; or equivalent combination of education and experience. History of research and publication in Post-War and contemporary American painting and/or printmaking or global photography, or public art. 3-5 years arts experience (including unpaid, internships, student work, professional, etc.) with increasing responsibilities and management. 2+ years of leadership experience. Intermediate to fluent speaking, writing, reading ability in Spanish (preferred), Khmer, or Tagalog.
