Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting 

 

(This new degree was approved by the CSULB Academic Senate on April 9, 2026, approved by the 

President on April 13, 2026, approved by the CSU Chancellor’s Office on June 30, 2026, and the decision was delivered to the campus by the Chancellor’s Office on August 14, 2026.) 

The MA in Translation and Interpreting prepares professionals for current and emerging markets within the language services industry. With equal grounding in technical training and foundational skills, the MA offers a common core emphasizing language technologies and disciplinary fundamentals, along with specialized training and applied research in two distinct tracks: translation and interpreting. The 36-unit program emphasizes ethical practices and intercultural communication and culminates in either a master’s thesis or project. 

Admission Requirements 

 Satisfy the university requirements for graduate admission 

  • A BA or BS degree in any field
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher from your baccalaureate degree
  • Advanced proficiency (minimum C1 level) in English and in your primary language of translation specialization
  • Knowledge of a third language at an intermediate level (B1–B2 level) of proficiency is desirable 

 Common Core (21 units) 

 Complete the following courses: 

  • TRST 500: Theory and Practice of Translation and Interpreting (3 units)
  • TRST 551: Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling (3 units)
  • TRST 601: Translation and Interpreting Technologies (3 units)
  • TRST 610: Professional Standards and Workflows in Translation and Interpreting (3 units)
  • TRST 696: Research Methods (3 units)
  • TRST 698: Thesis (3 units; taken twice for a total of 6 units)
