For Students
Our Goal
Our primary goal is to help you overcome barriers, reconnect with your education, and succeed at CSULB. CARES provides a supportive, non-judgmental space where students can access resources, explore options, and receive guidance during difficult times. You do not have to navigate challenges alone. We are here to help you get back on track and thrive.
Why Was I Referred to CARES?
You may have been referred by a professor, advisor, staff member, or friend who noticed you might benefit from extra support.
Referrals are not disciplinary; they are simply about care and connection. A CARES staff member will reach out to check in, listen, and connect you with resources.
CARES Services for Students
Our role is to connect students with support, resources, and problem-solving assistance during challenging times. Whether you are experiencing personal difficulties, health concerns, financial stress, basic needs challenges, or other barriers, CARES is here to help.
Our primary goal is simple: to help you get back in class, stay engaged, and be successful in reaching your academic and personal goals. We work with students in a supportive, non-judgmental way to identify needs, navigate resources, and create a plan for moving forward.
You do not have to navigate challenges alone. CARES is here to support your success every step of the way.
What Happens After a CARES Referral?
If you or someone else has concerns that may be affecting your well-being, ability to attend class, or overall success, a CARES referral may be submitted on your behalf. Here's what you can expect:
- A CARES referral is submitted.
Referrals can be completed by you, a faculty or staff member, a friend, family member, or another campus partner who is concerned about your well-being or success. - Your referral is assigned to a CARES Case Manager.
A dedicated case manager will review the referral and begin the outreach process. - You will receive a welcome email.
Your case manager will send you an email introducing themselves and inviting you to schedule an appointment. - Meet with your case manager.
During your appointment, you'll have the opportunity to share what is happening in your life and discuss any challenges that may be making it difficult to focus on school, attend class, or achieve your goals. - Receive personalized support.
Your case manager will work with you to identify your needs and provide a tailored list of campus and community resources designed to support your unique situation. - Advocacy and problem-solving assistance.
When appropriate, your case manager can help you navigate university processes, connect with campus partners, and advocate for support that addresses barriers to your success. - Develop a plan to move forward.
Together, you'll identify next steps and strategies to help you return to class, stay engaged, and make progress toward your academic and personal goals.
