Grant Goals

The Innovating Faculty Workloads through an Equity Lens (IFWEL) project at CSULB is funded by the National Science Foundation. This ADVANCE grant is an adaption of the Faculty Workload and Rewards Project, led by the University of Maryland, which resulted in a set of department-level interventions that addressed common issues that lead to inequitable workloads. CSULB’s ADVANCE team is focusing on Science Technology Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) departments with the following goals:

  • Identify and recognize invisible labor by women STEM faculty, including any differences that occur as the result of the intersection of race and gender for women of color.
  • Develop and implement policies and institutional practices at the department, college, and university level that promote equity in workload and reward structures.
  • Create greater equity in workloads within STEM disciplines at CSULB.
  • Improve retention, advancement, and workplace satisfaction of women faculty in STEM, with acute attention to women of color.
