Sustainable Transportation

Dear Campus Community,

Promoting sustainability is a top priority at The Beach. In addition to all the efforts we make to save water, recycle, and renovate to green standards, our campus was a proud charter signatory to the Climate Commitment, in which we pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. This is an ambitious goal, and one that will take the entire campus working together to achieve. Embracing mitigation efforts is key, including sustainable transportation. Did you know that commutes to campus by students and employees make up an overwhelming 52 percent of greenhouse gas emissions at The Beach? Reducing our number of drive-alone commutes would go a long way in helping us minimize our carbon footprint and meet our air quality mandate. Driving can be stressful, and as we all know parking on campus is challenging—especially at the beginning of the semester. Using sustainable transportation is an alternative that not only saves the environment but also offers financial and health benefits.

CSULB has many excellent sustainable transportation options. Currently, all students and employees can ride any Long Beach Transit bus for free with a TAP Card. There are seven Long Beach Transit lines that stop directly on campus, close to offices and classes. The TAP Card is just five dollars at the Cashier’s Office in Brotman Hall. That five dollars buys you unlimited rides on all Long Beach Transit buses while you are enrolled in classes or employed by the university.

We also offer free shuttle service both on and off campus. This fall we will launch the new Anaheim Shuttle, which stops on Anaheim Street and 10th Street in the densely populated area west of campus. For those of you who live farther from campus, the CSULB Zimride network is a great way to find a carpool partner. There are also programs to support vanpooling, bicycling, walking, and driving an electric vehicle (my personal mode of transportation). And, if you ever need access to a car during an emergency, there are seven Zipcars on campus and at Beachside that can be rented by the hour or by the day.
