Outcome of the Long Beach Collaborative Community Based Obesity Prevention Project

Obesity disproportionately affects Latino children. A family-based approach allows parents and their children to practice healthy lifestyle behaviors together. The Long Beach Collaborative Familias Saludables quasi-experimental study to reduce obesity among Latino children 5-12 years old was implemented in Los Angeles County in collaboration with TCC Family Health, the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, the CSULB Statistical Consulting Group.

This presentation will share the results of this 3-year study which concluded during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study’s findings reinforce family-based culturally tailored healthy lifestyle programs, that focus on diet and physical activity, as a promising community health approach in helping prevent overweight and obesity among Latino children in urban communities.
