ART WORKSHOP – 3D Mixed-Media Collage with Fiber Arts Club 
Thursday, February 12, 3pm-5pm

Make your own 3D collages using a variety of materials. The Fiber Arts Club will facilitate this workshop and help participants create their own 3D collage boxes inspired by the kitschy works of artist Simone Gad and the colorful cultural imagery of artist Jillian Thompson. This is a free, drop-in workshop with all supplies provided. All skill levels are welcome. It is open to students, faculty & staff, and the public.

ARTIST TALK – Artist Talk with June Edmonds: Silence 
Wednesday, February 25, 12:30pm-1:45pm

Join us for a special afternoon with artist June Edmonds where she will speak about her featured artwork, Silence. This is a free, drop-in program. It is open to students, faculty & staff, and the public. Artist June Edmonds recounts that she embarked on her “candy-confection colored” painting Silence (2020) “days after the George Floyd murder by police and the string of protests the occurred afterwards.” With Silence, Edmonds has stripped the Confederate flag of its traditional colors, replacing them with muted pastel hues. Addressing the fraught history of race relations in the United States, Edmonds wields the flag as a vector through which dialogue can occur around ignorance, presumed innocence, and truth. With its traditional symbolism silenced, the flag is rendered a space for new and just histories to emerge.

Open Mic with Comparative World Literature Club: HOMAGE

CSULB Comparative World Literature Club presents its third semesterly Open Mic at the Museum! This semester’s theme is HOMAGE. Express your admiration for a writer that inspires you by reading their work, read about something you love, read something inspired by the style of your favorite writer or artist, or tell an old story in your own style. Ekphrastic poetry and pastiche are welcome! This is a free, drop-in program. It is open to students, faculty & staff, and the public.

ARTIST TALK – Artist Talk with Jillian Thompson:
Wednesday, March 25, 10:30am-11:45am

Jillian Thompson, local artist and CSULB alumnus, will give a special talk about her artwork in Limitless. This is a free, drop-in program. It is open to students, faculty & staff, and the public. Jillian Thompson is a multidisciplinary artist examining visual representations of Black womanhood. Thompson is interested in how personal memory and day-to-day experience intertwine to shape cultural identity. Referencing found imagery culled from social media and magazines, Thompson explores the creation of contemporary Black womanhood that plays out in prevailing expressions of language, style, and material culture. Thompson’s artworks—spanning printmaking, collage, assemblage, and metalwork—reveal the formation of identity to be a social practice that gives rise to continuous exploration, study, and exchange.

Originating in Hackney, East London in 2011, Death Café provides a welcoming space for people to engage in open conversations about grief and death while enjoying free refreshments. This program is facilitated by CSULB School of Art faculty member Ailene deVries who fosters community and understanding through a subject many find taboo but is a part of everyone’s life.

Dr. Brett Mizelle Talk: Human Disconnection from Animals
Wednesday, 9/24 @ 2pm-3pm 

Dr. Brett Mizelle (American Studies, CSULB) will discuss human-animal disconnection and how it affects us, our habitats, and other animals. 

Dr. Brett Mizelle’s publications include the book Pig (Reaktion Books, 2011) and numerous articles, book chapters, and reviews in the fields of nineteenth-century American history and the history of human-animal relationships. His most recent publications are the field-defining Handbook of Historical Animal Studies edited with Mieke Roscher and André Krebber (De Gruyter, 2021) and "Mass Killing of Pigs and the Challenge of Multispecies Justice: Epidemics and the Entangled Lives of Humans and Animals from the 1970s to the Present," in Animals and Epidemics: Interspecies Entanglements in Historical Perspective (Bohlau, 2023). Work in progress includes the chapter "The Emergence of the American Animal Empire: Animal Imperialism and Extinction in Long Nineteenth-Century America" for the edited collection The History of U.S. Empire.

Eco-Grief, Habitat Loss, and Moving Forward through the Arts, Sciences, and Activism: An Interdisciplinary Panel

The panel will discuss the impact of habitat loss, eco-grief, and ways to bring about a hopeful future. All prompts will be provided by students in select courses and student organizations. This program begins with free-looking in the Museum and moves to Horn Center Lecture Hall 100 for the discussion.

The 2020–2021 inaugural program, PLATFORM, was a coalition collaborative project of CSU art museums and galleries called ConSortiUm featuring curators Erin Christovale and Valerie Cassel; artists Beatriz Cortez, Cristóbal Martínez and Kade L. Twist, Eyal Weizman, Shuan Leonardo, Howardena Pindell; and People's Kitchen Collective.
