2022-2023 A.S.C.E.N.D. Scholarships for Tuition, Subsistence Allowance and Academic and Classroom Support

Asian American, Native American and Pacific Islander (AANAPI) Student Success Center & Development (ASCEND) Program

     The 2022-2023 ASCEND scholarships for tuition, subsistence allowance and academic/classroom support applications for spring 2023 and summer 2023 are currently open until March 13, 2023 at 11:59PM. ASCEND scholarships will be distributed by CSULB Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. ASCEND scholarships will impact availability of student financial aid. 

 ASCEND scholarships aim to supplement academic needs through increasing postsecondary education access, affordability, and completion by offering $1,000 tuition scholarships, $1,000 subsistence allowance or $500 academic/classroom support for STEM students to enhance student’s educational success through timely graduation and excellent GPA. Undergraduate students pursuing an undergraduate degree in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, that most benefit from the ASCEND support are encouraged to apply. A total of 66 scholarships will be disbursed to qualified awardees during this 2022-2023 cycle. 

Eligibility: 

  • Undergraduate students with STEM majors from College of Business (COB), College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), College of Liberal Arts (CLA), College of Natural Science and Mathematics (CNSM), and College of Engineering (COE). 

  • Minimum overall combined cumulative GPA of 2.9.  

  • Students with need for support prior to improving their academic affordability, graduation and GPA during spring 2023 and summer 2023. 

How to apply: 

  1. Complete the online ASCEND scholarship application due March 13, 2023 at 11:59PM (ASCEND Undergraduate Scholarship application). Late applications will not be considered. 

  1. Statement of ASCEND scholarship impacts toward student’s success and ASCEND-AANAPISI program’s missions 

    • needs for ASCEND scholarship(s) and impacts of ASCEND scholarship once awarded. Challenges can be applied to justify the needs. What happens or will happen if the student is not selected as one of ASCEND scholarship recipients? (150 words maximum)

    • short- and long-term academic and professional goals, and how ASCEND scholarship can assist the students to achieve these goals? (150 words maximum)

    • how to enhance ASCEND:AANAPISI’s missions? One of ASCEND: AANAPISI grant’s missions is to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion toward AANAPI populations. Please, include student’s contribution to take steps to counter racist attacks on AANAPI or the applicant's contributions to stop racism, bias, and discrimination against AANAPI (150 words maximum).

  1. Applicants must provide a consent for ASCEND scholarship selection committee to obtain student academic records on CSULB system. 

Note:  

  1. Students with summer 2023 Provost’s Graduation Intensive Award (PGIA) or government summer tuition support, are not eligible for ASCEND summer 2023 tuition scholarship. 

  1. Students can prioritize up to 2 types of ASCEND scholarships. The applicant will be primarily reviewed based on their 1st priority of their selection. Scholarship will be disbursed to the specified scholarship of choice when the student allowance has not met, and ASCEND specific scholarship fund is available. If student’s support has been maximized to their allowance for both selected scholarship types, the award recipient cannot receive ASCEND scholarships. 

Review Criteria: 

  1. Tuition needs justification. 

  1. Impacts of ASCEND scholarship toward student’ success. 

  1. Ability to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion on CSULB STEM learning environment. 

  1. Potential to advance ASCEND-AANAPISI missions. 

  1. Passion for learning (achievable plan and ambiguous goals) 

  1. Quality of application package  

Award Requirements:

     Once the scholarship is disbursed, ASCEND scholarship awardees 

  1. must utilize the scholarship for spring 2023 and summer 2023 as prioritized at CSULB. The scholarship cannot be allocated to other expense categories if the maximum allowance has been reached. 

  2. ASCEND scholarship awardees for spring 2022 and summer 2023 must remain enrolling at CSULB without withdrawing from any courses. Please, contact ASCEND leadership team (ASCEND.AANAPISI@csulb.edu) if the award recipients encounter challenges that cause their academic difficulties after the ASCEND scholarship is disbursed. 

  3. are highly recommended taking Asian American, Native American or Pacific Islander relevant General Educational courses (G.E. foundation, G.E. exploration or upper division G.E.) within one year after receiving ASCEND scholarship.
         If students have enrolled in one of suggested G.E. courses, students are not required to take an additional course if the students have taken or are taking one of the following courses. The courses under the following course prefixes are considered:

         o   American Indian Studies (AIS) 
         o   Asian & Asian American Studies (AAAS) 
         o   Asian American Studies (ASAM) 
         o   Asian Studies (A/ST) 
         o   Cambodian (KHMR) 
         o   Chinese (CHIN) 
         o   Filipino (FIL) 
         o   Japanese (JAPN) 
         o   Korean (KOR) 
         o   Vietnamese (VIET)

  4. are required to complete at least one ASCEND professional and leadership workshops. 

  5. must meet their academic advisor after the scholarship is awarded. 

  6. must grant ASCEND team permission to track student’s academic performance to evaluate ASCEND’s impacts towards student’ success. 

  7. must complete annual ASCEND evaluation and survey forms. 

  8. must agree to be included in the ASCEND email list and ASCEND Discord server. 

  9. must agree to share their name and CSULB ID to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to verify the award allowance.
