The Search for Our Next President

The California State University Board of Trustees has launched a nationwide search for the next president of California State University, Long Beach. The effort is led by a distinguished, multi-constituency search committee.

Ranked as one of the top institutions in the country and No. 3 among national universities for promoting social mobility, Cal State Long Beach seeks an exceptional leader who will champion its students, mission and values. We invite the campus community and diverse stakeholders to be part of the process.

CSU Chancellor Mildred García shared the following update with the campus community on July 23, 2025:

As announced at the Board of Trustees meeting earlier today, I write to inform you that while our national search successfully identified several truly excellent candidates for the presidency of California State University, Long Beach, we have made the decision to extend the search.

This decision will allow us additional time to build upon our current candidate pool as we seek an exceptional leader whose professional and personal qualities are aligned with the unique strengths, opportunities and challenges associated with this vibrant and complex university – and reflect the characteristics most desired by the Cal State Long Beach community.

President Conoley has graciously agreed to serve in her role through the end of August as we work to identify an interim president to lead Cal State Long Beach through this time of transition. Details regarding the revised timeline for this search will be forthcoming.

The search for a campus president is among my most important responsibilities as chancellor, as it is for our Board of Trustees. It is a responsibility that we take very seriously, and we are proceeding with the utmost care and sense of urgency. Above all, please be assured that we are moving forward with an unwavering commitment to identify the best leader for the extended Cal State Long Beach community.
