Update Regarding Face Coverings

Published February 9, 2022

Dear Beach Community:

Along with many of you, I have been inspired this week by the return of in-person instruction. The campus is always more vibrant when filled with our talented students and faculty.

As you may have seen, the state of California recently announced that fully vaccinated individuals soon will not be required to wear masks indoors. However, our campus will continue to reflect guidance from Los Angeles County and Long Beach departments of public health as well as CalOSHA. Until our campus policy changes, masks will remain a requirement for all members of our community while indoors. Facial coverings are not required when outdoors.

For faculty and staff, well-fitting medical-grade masks, surgical masks, or higher-level respirators such as an N95, KN95, or KF94 are required. Those staff members who work with hearing-impaired students can use clear face masks available through the Bob Murphy Access Center.

Students who do not work on campus are not required to wear medical-grade masks but must wear approved face coverings when indoors on campus. Gaiters, bandanas, and those coverings with one-way bypass valves are not considered acceptable face coverings. If you are a student who would like a medical-grade face covering, you can obtain one from the Library, Student Union, or the Horn Center.

We will continue to assess evolving guidance from the state and local health agencies in determining appropriate policies.

I look forward to seeing (half) your faces this semester!

Go Beach!
