Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholars 2019-20

The Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar Program is designed to assist students in preparing to enter PhD doctoral programs.  This outstanding opportunity has helped many former CSULB students open the door to doctoral study – some of whom are now professors at CSULB or other universities.

CSULB receives $3,000 from the Chancellor’s Office for each student who is selected as a Pre-Doctoral Scholar.  These funds are designed to enable the Scholar to travel to Ph.D.-granting institutions and professional meetings anywhere in United States.  Other eligible expenses include membership costs in professional organizations, applications fees, and other costs in applying to a doctoral program.  In addition, each Pre-Doctoral Scholar will have an opportunity to apply for a summer grant to work on an approved research program, typically at a University of California campus.  Each student applying to the Pre-Doctoral Program must select a CSU faculty sponsor who will be available to work with the student during the 2019-20 academic year in implementing a plan to prepare the student for enrollment in a doctoral program.

Graduate Research Fellowship 2019-20

The Graduate Student Fellowship is awarded by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon recommendation from CSULB faculty to students who show potential for success in scholarly and creative activity and an interest in advanced study.  The purpose of the fellowship program is to support “mentored” or collaborative scholarly and creative activities involving CSULB graduate students and faculty mentors, ultimately with the intent of enhancing the graduate student culture on campus.

Ten graduate fellowships are available annually.  The amount of the fellowship is $9,000 for one academic year.  Funds for this award come from the Office of the Chancellor to support graduate students who demonstrate financial need, as well as academic merit.

Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program Scholars 2019-20

Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP).  The purpose of the Program is to increase the number of individuals who demonstrate potential as doctoral students and who may be interested in applying for future CSU instructional faculty.

This exemplary program has been in existence for over 20 years and has resulted in the hiring of over 600 CSU faculty members in a wide range of disciplines.  Currently, more than 35 CSULB faculty members are former recipients of this competitive award.

The program is open to applicants who will be new or continuing full-time students in doctoral programs at regionally accredited universities anywhere within the United States. Each applicant is required to have a full-time tenure/tenure track CSU faculty advisor who will provide professional mentoring and networking opportunities throughout the student’s educational experience. Applicants are not required to have attended the CSU or to have been accepted in a doctoral program at the time of their application.

The CDI loan is $10,000 per year for three years and forgivable for those with full- or half-time teaching appointments at a CSU campus.  Recipients must be CSU employees in order to receive loan forgiveness.  Being awarded the CDI loan is not a guarantee of employment at the CSU.
