Travel Advisory

Published January 31, 2017

Dear Students,

As you are aware, President Trump signed an Executive Order, “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” on Friday, January 27, 2017.  Although this travel ban is in effect, the situation remains uncertain as the Trump administration clarifies guidance for implementation of the Executive Order.  It is important to note the following provisions of the Order:

  • Temporary suspension of non-immigrant and immigrant visa issuance and entry into the United States for 90 days for all foreign nationals traveling on passports from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen.
  • All travelers, including U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents (LPRs), may experience increased scrutiny when seeking to enter the United States if they are dual nationals of or have recently traveled to one of the impacted countries.  DHS has instructed airlines to deny boarding to individuals who are subject to the travel ban, with the exception of LPRs.

Within 24-hours of the issuance of the Executive Order, multiple lawsuits were filed by civil rights organizations, and federal courts around the country have issued stays of certain parts of the Executive Order.  Despite these judicial actions, the Executive Order remains in force.  Moreover, there is considerable uncertainty regarding how Customs and Border Protection officers are implementing the Executive Order at ports of entry.

As a university we are committed to supporting all members of our richly diverse community. In the Center for International Education, we are dedicated to ensuring that all of our students feel welcome at CSULB.  You are cherished members of our CSULB family.

Given the uncertainty of the situation, regretfully, we must advise students from the seven countries listed in the Order to avoid all international travel for now. Ultimately, it is your decision to travel abroad - we will not prevent you from doing so. Be forewarned, however, that if you choose to travel outside of the U.S. according to the Executive Order your re-entry to the United States will be denied.

For more details on the travel advisory, please see the NAFSA website.

Please do not hesitate to contact cie-student@csulb.edu with any questions or concerns that you might have.  If you know of any CSULB student from the affected countries who is currently outside the U.S., please let us know immediately.

We will provide updates as we monitor the situation.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeet Joshee
