The Cal State Long Beach Theater Department, led by professor Alexandra Billings, joined a national coalition of theaters Thursday for The Ghostlight Project, a celebration and affirmation of the power of theatre to spark change and honor diversity.

The collective, simultaneous action with lights and candles was symbolic of shedding light on those who feel marginalized by society. The national one-day project was a pledge “to stand and protect the values of inclusion, participation and compassion for everyone.

Alexander led students in singing “Give a Little Bit” by SuperTramp during the ceremony.

Billings co-stars as “Davina” in the Golden Globe-winning television series Transparent.  She made entertainment history by becoming the first transgender actress to portray a transgender character on television.
