Fall 2017 Applications Now Open

Published October 5, 2016

As summer fades away and the fall breeze begins to sweep in, many prospective students are eager to begin their university applications. Soon.

Cal State Long Beach will be accepting Fall 2017 freshmen and transfer applications Oct. 1 through Nov. 30. To apply, visit CSUMentor.edu

Evelyn Daliwan, interim director of University Outreach and School Relations, said every fall semester CSULB has received roughly 80,000 undergraduate applications. Last year, the school received more than 95,000 applicants, making it one of the most sought-after univiersities in the nation.

Freshmen applicants can either select a specific major or apply as undeclared. In addition to completing an application, freshmen applicants must take the SAT or the ACT, preferably by the end of October 2016 but no later than December 2016. Applicants must request their score results be sent directly to CSULB from the testing agency. Once CSULB officials review the application, they will notify applicants by email with instructions and deadlines for any possible additional documents.

Daliwan recommends applicants start the application process early.

“We start accepting applications October 1st, but over 50 percent of student applications at CSU’s in general, come the week of Thanksgiving,” said Daliwan. “My recommendation is to turn in your application early. There is no difference to us October 1 or November 30, the difference is for the student.”

Daliwan said students often become stressed out because of applying last minute and they are trying to hurry, thereby making mistakes on their applications. In addition to starting their application early, Daliwan advises students to check their email regularly and often.

For transfer applicants, Daliwan said students should know admission requirements for their major.

“For transfer students, it’s really knowing what the requirements are within their major,” said Daliwan. “Otherwise they’re just not going to even have a chance.”

Prospective transfer students are advised to review the  specific requirements for the major they are interested in. Admission to all majors at CSULB is competitive, so all transfer students must declare a major when submitting their application.

Students should also keep in mind that CSULB is an impacted campus.

“There are minimum requirements that are different than the Cal State requirements and they [students] don’t realize it,” said Daliwan. “Our website does a good job of putting the information out there.”

If a major is highly impacted, it will be noted and additional supplemental criteria and requirements will be indicated. Transfer students are advised to visit Assist to determine which courses offered at California institutions will satisfy the CSULB specific course requirements.

After the application is submitted, CSULB’s Admissions will send you a notification by email to acknowledge receipt of your application.
