Matt Becker
Matt Becker, Ph.D., is the Conrey Endowed Chair of Hydrogeology and a professor of earth science at Cal State Long Beach.
His research focuses on fluid flow in complex subsurface environments, including fractured rock hydrology, hydrogeophysics, aquifer recharge, geothermal tracer methods, and coastal and island hydrology. Becker’s work often uses fiber-optic and distributed sensing technologies to improve groundwater and environmental monitoring. He has held research positions with the U.S. Geological Survey, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and was named the 2024 Darcy Distinguished Lecturer by the National Ground Water Association. He teaches hydrogeology, hydrology, groundwater modeling, and contaminant hydrogeology.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from Michigan State University and master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
