Justin Gomer
Justin Gomer, Ph.D., is an associate professor of American studies in the College of Liberal Arts at Cal State Long Beach.
His research explores racial formations, popular culture, and modern U.S. history, with a focus on the post–civil rights era. He is the author of White Balance: How Hollywood Shaped Colorblind Ideology and Undermined Civil Rights (UNC Press, 2020), named one of the best books of 2020 by the African American Intellectual History Society. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Boston Review, USA Today, and Black Perspectives, among other publications. He teaches courses including Race and Hollywood, The Suburbs, and The American Studies Mixtape.
He earned his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in African American studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
