The free coffee, donuts and fruit were no match for the balloon animals.

Students lined up Monday to receive a colorful latex lobster, lion or other animal from a balloon artist, whose fun handiwork helped many to alleviate the stress of finals week, even for a few minutes. It was one of several events scheduled by Associated Students Inc. this week.

“It’s fun, it’s cute and a great way to take a break,” said Stephanie Mai, a third-year liberal studies major. “I studied all last night and wanted a break.”

Stefi Marie, another liberal studies major, saw the list of activities Associate Students, Inc. had lined up for sleep-challenged students this week and decided to check out the balloon animals and sand art key chains. She opted to create a multi-colored key chain.

“When I was studying, I would take a break and go on social media and saw what they were offering,” Marie said. “I won’t come every day, but when I am in school this week and I have the time.”

While another student slept soundly in a nearby chair, Fernanda Rodriquez was among roughly 20 students in line for the activities.

“It’s a great distraction from studying finals,” Rodriquez said.

ASI communication manager James Ahumada said the school tries to offer various activities from year to year. Last year, ASI had therapy dogs on campus to help students deal with stress. On Tuesday, a therapist will be at the USU giving free massages from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Later Monday, students could get their likeness drawn by a caricature artist, make DIY slime, play corn hole and visit the Kind Bar station.

On Tuesday, students also will be able to paint ceramic superheroes or make buttons.
