This grant is awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a Bachelor's or professional degree and to students in an eligible teacher credential program. Award amounts are based on the student's level of need. If the student is enrolled less than full-time, the award will be prorated as follows: 9-11 units – multiply the award by 0.75; 6-8 units – multiply the award by 0.50; 1-5 units – multiply the award by 0.25. The proration is calculated separately for each term. NOTE: the disbursed amount will be adjusted based on registration changes (adds and drops) completed through the fourth week of classes (Census). Based on the proration rules above, your award may increase or decrease. A decrease in eligibility may result in a bill.
For teacher credential students – you must be enrolled at least half-time (6 units) to receive this award, and disbursement will be made only for enrollment in required credential courses. Our office will review your course work at Census, and if some or all of your registered classes are NOT required credential courses, your Pell Grant may be reduced. A decrease in your Pell award will result in a bill. Students who are "conditionally" admitted to the program are NOT eligible for a Pell award.
This grant is awarded to undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. First priority is given to students with the lowest Expected Family Contributions (EFCs) who receive a Pell Grant and who apply by March 2 (priority application filing deadline). You must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units to receive the award.

A second year (30-59 units) undergraduate must have completed such a rigorous program after January 1, 2006 and have obtained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 upon completing 30 units. A student who has graduated from a California high school and met the CSU minimum standards for admission has completed an approved program of study. The award amounts are $750 for a first year undergraduate, and $1,300 for a second year undergraduates.
The Federal National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART) is a gift aid program and awarded to students in their third (60 - 89 units) or fourth (90-119 units ) year of study. Cal Grants are awarded by the California Student Aid Commission to students who are California residents and who meet certain income and/or GPA requirements. Cal Grants do not have to be repaid. There are 2 types of Cal Grants that can be used at CSULB:
Cal Grant A is awarded to undergraduate California residents based on financial need and GPA. This grant covers the State University Fee (SUF) portion of a student's registration fees. The amount of the award is based on the number of units in which the student is enrolled, which must be at least 6 units to receive this award. However, if you are enrolled in exactly 6 units, the award will be reduced to the amount of your SUF. Students awarded a Cal Grant A are not eligible for a State University Grant (SUG). Students who receive a grant or waiver covering registration fees are not eligible for a Cal Grant A. In addition, students enrolled through UCES are not eligible for a Cal Grant A.
Cal Grant B is awarded to undergraduate California residents who are primarily from disadvantaged and low-income families. For the first year, Cal Grant B pays a subsistence stipend to assist with non-tuition costs such as living expenses, books, supplies, etc. In subsequent years, the grant pays the stipend and covers the State University Fee (SUF) of a student’s registration fees. Like Cal Grant A, the student must be enrolled in at least 6 units to receive the award; however, if the student is enrolled in exactly 6 units, the award will be reduced to the amount of your SUF. Students awarded Cal Grant B Fee are not eligible for a State University Grant (SUG). Students who receive a grant or waiver covering registration fees, or who are enrolled through UCES, are not eligible for the fee portion of the Cal Grant B award.
This grant is awarded to California residents who demonstrate financial need. Priority is given to students who file the FAFSA by March 2 of the prior year (priority application filing deadline). The State University Grant (SUG) award is used to offset a student’s State University Fee (SUF). If you are enrolled in six units or fewer, this award will be reduced to the amount of your SUF. Students awarded a Cal Grant A or B Fee are not eligible for a SUG. Students who receive a grant or waiver covering registration fees are not eligible for SUG. In addition, students enrolled through UCES are not eligible to receive the SUG award.
This grant is for undergraduate students admitted to the University through the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Eligibility is determined by the same need criteria as for federal financial aid programs. You must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units to receive the award.
