Cole Conservatory Scholar of the Month:
March 2015

Liam Lacey, horn

Liam Lacey.Liam Lacey, horn, is a Cole Scholar and member of the Bob Cole Symphony. He attended North Torrance High School. Liam writes:

"I was born to my bassist American father and pianist Japanese mother, and was raised in Torrance, CA. I began studying music in third grade, on clarinet; after our youth orchestra's trip to Carnegie Hall in my sixth grade year, I began an odyssey of sorts through the world of orchestral music, learning viola, trombone, and horn, while picking up a little guitar, bass, and steel drums on the side. I eventually decided that the horn was for me and am now pursuing a bachelor's in horn performance. I volunteer with North Torrance Youth Musicians' Ensemble as a brass coach and perform with the Bellflower Symphony. I am also an Eagle Scout. In my spare time, I like to read, listen to music, play video games, and build electric guitars."

Were your parents your first musical inspirations?
Yes my father studied both jazz and rock guitar but graduated with a degree in philosophy. Before marrying, my mother attended a conservatory in Tokyo where she studied the organ. Both of them still play.

Leonard Naurmi has also been a great teacher and influence along with Glen Kamida, Director of the North Torrance Youth Orchestra.

How did you choose the French Horn?
I joined the North Torrance Youth Orchestra with the encouragement of Glen Kamida. While assisting him in unpacking new orchestra instruments, I noticed the French horn and said softly out loud, "maybe I can play this?" Mr. Kamida tossed me a Level I Horn book and said "give it a try."

What type of music do you listen to other than classical?
Mostly RadioHead. I recently discovered a discovered Civil Twilight, a new indie band.

What do you see in your future with music?
This is my first year. I am having a great time playing and have a long way to go.
