Cole Conservatory Scholar of the Month:
April 2014

Christopher Maldonado, piano

Chris Maldonado

CHRISTOPHER MALDONADO is our April 2014 Cole Scholar. Before coming to CSULB, Chris graduated from Bonita High School in La Verne, California. This is his fourth year in the keyboard studies program. He frequently assists several large ensembles and solo performances within the Department. Chris is a collaborative artist and also teaches piano privately.

BCCM: Why or how did you choose your instrument?

CHRIS: I grew up as a singer. I had always admired piano. At 14 I began lessons, and then decided that I wanted to learn how to play. It has been me ever since.

BCCM: Why did you choose the Bob Cole Conservatory?

CHRIS: I came to this school specifically to study with Craig Richey. It is an honor to have both received this scholarship and to study with Mr. Richey. I have grown as a player through these resources and have had so much support and encouragement throughout this process.

BCCM: What are your major influences?

CHRIS: Social rights work is something that I am very passionate about. My training and experience in InterACT at CSULB taught me so much about the true facts of social injustice and it’s life-altering effects. Much of the choral and vocal repertoire is inspirational and moving to me. I grew up singing and it influences the musical choices I make daily as a pianist.

BCCM: Who do you admire in your field of study?

CHRIS: Currently, I appreciate and admire many of my friends, colleagues and teachers/ faculty at BCCM. Outside of school I really admire Alicia de Larrocha, Leonard Bernstein, the Anderson and Roe duo, and Carl Vine.

BCCM: What do like to do with your so-called “free time”?

CHRIS: I love going geocaching, getting coffee, laughing really hard, embarrassing my friends, and making more music.

BCCM: Do you have plans for the future?

CHRIS: I'm currently shooting towards international piano competitions and grad school/doctorate studies abroad. I plan to settle somewhere cold!! Whether I'm performing solo or collaborating with other musicians I just want to live and make music. I'll keep working towards that!

Congratulations CHRIS!
