Cole Conservatory Scholar of the Month:
May 2014

Kan Adachi, percussion

Kan Adachi.

May’s Cole Scholar, percussionist KAN ADACHI, has been awarded the Cole Scholarship for the last four academic years. Kan‘s parents moved to the US when he was 5; his father was an electrical engineer and his mother is a pianist/organist.

BCCM: Why did you choose Cal State Long Beach over other institutions?

KAN: I didn’t consider any other school. My decision was based hugely on the diversity of CSULB’s percussion program.  There are several distinctly different percussion studies options and each individual student has the option to select an instructor form one or two designated studio faculty.

BCCM: Which area did you choose?

KAN: I haven’t honed it down to one area of interest because each instructor is so passionate about teaching; they are doing what they love and that is incredibly inspiring.

BCCM: How has your education affected your performance?

KAN: The education process is more than learning from teachers. It is actually the culmination of interacting with teachers and classmates as we listen and respond to pieces we play. Receiving feedback from both instructors and fellow players drives me to pay extra attention to the fine details. When getting down to the “nitty gritty” you can really get lost in time. It is nice to be on stage, playing with everyone and sharing this experience with the audience.

BCCM: When did you begin playing?

KAN: I started in middle school and played throughout high school. I realized I had ability and a natural love for it. Somewhere along the way I saw a much more significant reason for music and found out why I was drawn to it in a more holistic light.

BCCM: What are your future plans?

KAN: This may surprise you but I am not planning on a professional career in music.  Music has been good to me. It is easy to get caught up in just one passion when you are immersed in it.  But I have other passions that I would like to pursue, especially in design.

Congratulations KAN!
