Cole Conservatory Scholar of the Month:
September 2014

Jack Wilkins, tenor

Jack Wilkins.

Tenor Jack Wilkins was born and raised in Watsonville, CA. His singing career began in the church where his father has been the music minister for 25 years. Growing up in church, he was featured in many musicals and holiday celebrations. His mother and older sister are also beautiful singers.

Jack’s first significant solo performance was in the fifth grade as the Priest Hezekiah in a children’s musical about King Josiah. He claims the costume he had to wear made him look more like a chubby nun than a Priest. However, the solo "Trust in God" took on special significance in his life. He looks back on that performance as the beginning of his desire to pursue music at a higher level. His middle school voice teacher, Janet Culwell, provided a place for Jack to grow in his musical abilities and later encouraged him to continue.

As he went through high school, his passion for music grew. After his sophomore year he transferred from a public high school to Monte Vista Christian School, specifically to focus on musical studies. There, he worked with Dr. Tony Dehner and truly began to take singing seriously. While attending Monte Vista, he won a NATS competition, multiple California State Solo Ensemble Festival Gold Command Performances and sang numerous solos in multiple honor choirs. Dr. Dehner encouraged and prepared Jack for a collegiate career as a vocalist and encouraged him to major in vocal performance.

When applying for colleges, Dr. Dehner also encouraged him to audition at CSULB. When he did, he was offered the Bob Cole Scholarship. He fell in love with the school and the music program and began studying at the Beach. He is currently in his third year at the Conservatory and sings in the Chamber Choir. He has also sung with the University Choir and the vocal jazz ensemble, Jazz & Tonic. He studies voice with Tim MacDougall. He has been a featured soloist in the Winter Festival Concert, Beach Café and several other BCCM concerts. He was also a recipient of the Fine Arts Affiliates Scholarship this past year. Jack hopes to become a professional oratorio singer and tour the world.

In his free time he enjoys working at Starbucks as a barista and frequently going to Disneyland with friends (30 times this year!). He says his "guilty pleasure" is the YouTube band Pomplamoose.

Please join Cole Scholar, Jack Wilkins for his junior recital, Friday, December 5, 2014 at 3pm in the Frank Pooler Choral Room.

Congratulations Jack!
