Cole Conservatory Scholar of the Month:
March 2014

Josie A. Boyer, cello

Portrait of Josie with her cello.

JOSIE A. BOYER grew up in Long Beach and began studying cello at Burroughs Elementary. Her mother had grown up in a house full of ("squeaky") violinists and convinced her to choose the cello instead. Appealing to the shy 2nd grader, she told her she could hide behind the cello without being seen, and also be able to sit while performing. Josie was sold!

Continuing on, she played four years for the Long Beach Polytechnic High School Orchestra under Andy Osman, conductor. She additionally has performed with the American Youth Orchestra, the Palos Verdes Cello Quartet, the California Music Educators Association All State Orchestra, the California Orchestra Directors Association State Orchestra, and was a member of the Palos Verdes Cello Quartet from 2008-10.

When applying for colleges, Josie choose to stay local for her undergraduate degree, stating, "CSULB actually sold itself!" When she met David Garrett (LA Phil member and BCCM Professor of Cello), she decided that he "was a good match."

When asked if any one composer or work had been influential she says, "I want to do everything. I like to take little bits from this composition, another composer, and from everywhere. I like new music for it's sheer strangeness. I enjoy performing new works—ones that are actually being heard for the first time. It is also exciting to work with a living composer who can explain the details of his or her notations without having to guess."

When not in a practice room with her cello, Josie enjoys being outside and likes to bicycle and hike; inside, it’s WarCraft and other video games. Recently she has been enjoying the music of the group Hello/Goodbye.

Josie is applying for graduate schools this semester, having been accepted at Roosevelt in Chicago where she may be studying with Karen Basarck next spring. She is still waiting to hear from others.

Congratulations Josie!
