Eligibility

Students can apply to become a METRIC-Starter or a METRIC-Scholar. All applicants must:

  • Be enrolled full-time at CSULB during the upcoming (next)¬†academic year as an undergraduate student
    (post-baccalaureate/second bachelor students are not eligible)
  • Be a declared BS-major or BS-pre-major in one of the following:
    • Chemistry
    • Earth Science
    • Geology
    • Mathematics
    • Mathematics Education
    • Physics
    • Statistics
  • Be a U.S. citizen or Legal U.S. Permanent Resident
  • Be eligible for need-based financial aid based on their FAFSA
  • Agree to participate in the program activities
  • Agree to provide tracking data and be part of longitudinal research and tracking of graduate studies or professional placement

Applicants must also meet the criteria for either METRIC-Starter or METRIC-Scholar.

METRIC-Starter

The METRIC-Starter program is for students who have at least 3 years left to graduate. In addition to the general criteria, applicants to METRIC-Starter must also:

  • Have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
  • Have earned a minimum "B" grade in MATH 111 and MATH 113 and eligibility to take MATH 122 (Students who are currently making successful progress towards their eligibility to take MATH 122 can be considered on an individual basis)

METRIC-Scholar

The METRIC-Scholar program is for students who have at most 3 years left to graduate. In addition to the general criteria, applicants to METRIC-Scholar must also:

  • Have a minimum CSULB GPA of 2.5
  • Have met all prerequisites to take the appropriate upper division major courses as defined by:
    • Chemistry: Eligible to take CHEM 371A and a minimum "B" in prior CHEM courses
    • Geology: Eligible to take GEOL 322 and a minimum "B" in prior GEOL courses
    • Mathematics: Eligible to take MATH 310, 364A, 380, or other 300-level MATH and a minimum "B" in prior MATH courses
    • Physics: Eligible to take PHYS 310 and a minimum "B" in prior PHYS courses
