 Police Chief Fernando Solorzano
Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new and returning students, faculty, and staff to California State University Long Beach, and would like to assure you that the University Police Department is sincerely committed to making your experience here at CSULB a safe and welcoming one in which you can pursue your academic endeavors.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all students of our campus policy regarding the use of "coasting devices" (skateboards, roller blades, scooters, and hover boards). The policy identifies areas where the use of such devices is permitted, as well as "pedestrian-only zones" where the use of coasting devices is prohibited. There is signage posted in strategic locations to remind you when you are in a "pedestrian-only zone". Over the last several years there have been numerous accidents involving pedestrians and persons using these devices that have resulted in injury to both the pedestrian and rider alike. Additionally, there is a 5MPH rule that is in effect when using these devices in approved areas. Parking structures, roadways, and parking lots remain off limits to the use of these devices for the safety of all involved. As always the basic principle behind the new policy is to ensure that our students and staff are able to conduct their affairs while on campus in a safe environment.

As always, the University Police Department is here to serve the interests of our campus community and is always available to help make your time here at CSULB a safe, secure, and rewarding experience.

Respectfully,

Fernando M. Solorzano

CSULB Chief of Police
