Dr. Sathianathan was named Vice Provost for Academic Planning in April 2017.
He was the Interim Associate Vice President for Academic Planning, and before that he served as associate dean for Academic Programs in the college of Engineering and a professor of Mechanical Engineering at CSULB since 2009. He has a strong record of commitment to enhancing the value of a college education by reducing time to graduation, reducing units to degree, and implementing effective strategies to improve both four-year and six-year graduation rates.
Dr. Sathianathan played a leadership role in establishing the first extension degree program in California's Antelope Valley in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. These programs are broadly supported by the Chancellor's Office, the City of Lancaster, local community colleges and a broad spectrum of industry partners.
Prior to joining CSULB in 2009, Dr. Sathianathan was a faculty member and later the department head for the School of Engineering Design, Technology, and Professional Programs at Penn State University for 19 years.
Dr. Sathianathan has led several multi-institutional NSF-funded initiatives to enhance engineering education, especially focused on retention. He has received the Boeing Outstanding Educator Award, Boeing Welliver Faculty Fellow Award and the DOW Outstanding Faculty Award for his work in engineering education.
Dr. Sathianathan earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Oklahoma State University.
