Paid Administrative Leave for Employees

Published March 25, 2020

CSULB Faculty, Staff and MPP employees:

The California State University (CSU) system has authorized a new program that will provide up to 128 hours of paid administrative leave (prorated if less than full time) to university employees, academic student employees (prorated by scheduled hours), and non-represented student assistants (prorated by scheduled hours) who are unable to work due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The paid administrative leave hours may only be used if the employee is unable to work, on campus or remotely, for the following purposes:

  • When an employee is unable to work due to the employee’s own COVID-19-related illness, or that of a family member where the employee would normally be able to use sick leave;
  • When an employee is unable to work because the employee has been directed by their supervisor or healthcare provider not to come to the worksite for COVID-19-related reasons and/or it is not operationally feasible for the

employee to work remotely;

  • When an employee is unable to work due to a COVID-19-related school or daycare closure and the employee is required to be at home with a child or dependent, and it is not operationally feasible for the employee to work remotely or in conjunction with the childcare commitment.

All benefits-eligible faculty, staff and MPP employees, academic student employees, and non-represented student assistants may request to use the hours at any time, including intermittently, during the period March 23, 2020 – December 31, 2020, in consultation with the appropriate administrator, provided that such use shall not adversely affect the delivery of essential university services. The intent of this program is to help eligible employees preserve their accrued paid leave credits (VA, SL, CTO, PH) and instead first use the paid leave available under this program should there be a need for qualifying and operationally feasible time away from work.

This decision provides much needed support for certain employees whose work has been disrupted as we work together to address ongoing challenges and the result of disruptions due to COVID-19.

Please note that this program does not apply to employees who are 65 years or older or employees who have identified as being "high risk" as defined by the CDC in relation to the COVID-19 virus. Staff Human Resources or Faculty Affairs will be contacting these employees separately to communicate additional program updates related to their telecommuting or paid administrative leave arrangements.

More details will be provided when we receive additional information from the Chancellor’s Office.

Questions regarding this program related to non-represented student assistants, staff and MPP employees may be directed to COVID-19-Staff-Info@csulb.edu

Questions regarding this program related to academic student employees (TAs/GAs/ISAs) and faculty may be directed to COVID19-Faculty-Info@csulb.edu .

In the meantime, continue to visit CSULB's COVID-19 site for additional information and updates.
