Cal State Long Beach has established its inaugural Black Excellence Collegium (BEC) at The Beach and the Black Student Success (BSS) initiatives, responding to the urgent needs of its Black student population. As CSULB works toward implementing its four BSS initiatives to promote Black excellence, the Division of Academic Affairs recently hired Demetri Kelley to serve as our new Associate Director of Black Student Success. Kelley will lead the coordination of BSS initiatives, along with the other core members of the BEC.

Kelley comes to CSULB with a wealth of knowledge, experience, and commitment to equitable and holistic student success. Kelley holds a B.S. in Psychology, an M.A. in College Student Personnel, and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Leadership for Educational Justice (Ed.D.) program at the University of Redlands.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to coordinate the Black Student Success initiatives at CSULB and be part of a meaningful difference for the Black Beach community.  Since the start of my role, I've learned about the synergistic moment we are in across the CSU and within the Long Beach community, and I'm excited to partner with LBUSD, LBCC, and our campus and community partners to advance Black excellence at The Beach," says Kelley. CSULB is eager to implement these strategies to increase the overall outcomes and looks forward to utilizing our four initiatives to uplift Black Excellence at The Beach.
