Tutorial Services

What do you think when someone says "tutoring"?  If you said, "only failing students need a tutor," think again.  Too many students seem to think that, and frankly, nothing could be further from the truth.  Of course, we do help students who are struggling, but we also work with lots of successful students who are working hard to keep their GPAs high.  Here are a few common questions.

How do I know if I need a tutor?

It's simple really. If you're having difficulty with a class, a tutor can help.  This is true even if you haven't had any trouble with other classes.  We all learn differently, so even if you are a brilliant mathematician, you could have some trouble in your Geography class (or vice versa).

How can a tutor help me?

A tutor's job is to help you understand the concepts you are studying in your class.  Our tutors are trained to help you become an independent learner by helping you understand the concepts taught in your class and by working with you to develop good study skills.

Is there anything a tutor can't do?

Well, a tutor can't do your work for you.  You still have to go to class, take notes, read course materials, do homework and take tests.  With a little extra tutoring guidance and advice, all that should be a little more comfortable.  Remember, at the end of the semester the grade will be YOURS, not the tutor's, so you will still have to work to be successful.

Who are the tutors?

Our tutors are upper division and graduate students with proven track records in the subjects they tutor.  Every tutor receives training in tutoring techniques and methods.  Our ongoing training and certification program teaches tutors how to help students become independent learners and successful students.

Are there different kinds of tutoring?

Yes!  Different students have different needs, so we have five different tutoring formats to meet them...read on!

Drop-in Tutoring

This is our most popular tutoring format - about 2000 student check-ins a semester.  Flexibility is the reason most students use drop-in tutoring.  You can check-in to see a tutor as many times as you need to during the semester.  To see when drop-in tutoring is available for your subject, click here

There is a small fee for drop-in tutoring, just $40 per subject per semester.

(Some campus programs cover tutoring fees. Contact us for more information.)

Individual
Individual Appointments

Sometimes you need tutoring tailored to  meet your personal needs.  Individual appointments let you work one-on-one with a tutor at a pre-arranged time.  Typically, individual appointments are scheduled once a week for five weeks at a time.

There is a $65 fee for five one hour sessions.

(Some campus programs cover tutoring fees. Contact us for more information.)

Group Tutoring

Some students prefer to learn in a group setting.  Each semester we form several group tutoring sessions that meet twice a week in the LAC.  Groups are formed early in the semester and are based on student requests.  To get a group started, come to the LAC.  To find out what groups are already meeting, click here.

Group Tutoring is free thanks to the generous support of 49er Shops.

Community Tutoring

Students in middle school, high school or even community colleges in the area can take advantage of our services too.  Community tutoring appointments let you work one-on-one with a tutor at a pre-arranged time.  Typically, community appointments are scheduled once a week for five weeks at a time.

There is a $75 fee for five one hour sessions.  (Most private tutors charge more than four times that amount!)

Online Tutoring

If you do homework in the evenings like most people, you know that that is when you run into trouble.  Online tutoring is offered in selected subjects in the evening hours.  Find out what subjects are offered this semester here.

Online tutoring is available to students receiving drop-in or individual tutoring.
