Learning disabilities may be hard to
diagnose accurately, since many people have problems learning that are due to
other factors such as low self-esteem; anxiety or depression; poor learning and
study skills; poor basic skills in reading, math, or writing; or low motivation
to do well in academic settings. Often students who have been poorly
motivated develop a combination of several of the above factors. These factors
combined may lead to poor performance in school that is hard to diagnose and
differentiate from true learning disabilities.
Even if someone truly has a
learning disability, they usually have problems in one or more of the above
areas making academic success even more difficult. An accurate diagnosis
of a learning disability does not mean that these factors shouldn't be
addressed. On the contrary, it is probably even more important to
emphasize these factors to help compensate for any inherent learning disability.
[Many parents or students falsely assume that traditional modes of learning
should be ignored, or will not help.]

ADVICE
Be sure that you get an assessment by a
trained (and preferably) licensed professional who specializes in Learning
Disabilities and gives a widely-accepted battery of tests before you accept a
diagnosis of "learning disability." Many teachers, counselors,
and others assume that anyone who has problems learning is suffering from a
learning disability when the true cause(s) may be the factors listed
above. Even if the student has a learning disability, they probably need
help in one or more of these areas. Get additional assessment and help for
the above factors whether the student has a learning disability or not!
