The Beach Learning Community

The Beach Learning Community (BLC) was created in 2007 to help Entering Freshmen who are required to complete a Writing Skills course and two prebaccalaureate math courses within their first year succeed. If all three of the prebaccalaureate classes are not successfully completed during the first two semesters of attendance at CSULB, students are not allowed to return their second year.  Students in the first BLC group are doing better than other students with the same requirements that are not part of the BLC.

A learning community involves taking two or more classes with the same group of students which creates a familiarity with fellow students making it easier to make friends and form study groups both of which are important factors in success.  The reserved paired class sections for the BLC are required classes to meet the prebaccalaureate requirement and G.E. classes.

The 150 students who become a part of the BLC are taught by professors who are part of a team consisting of advisors, study group leaders, tutors and mentors all collaborating to help them succeed.

Other benefits of being in the BLC are free tutoring, a supplemental instruction class to help students understand a general education course, extra support staff in their writing skills course, and reserved classes during their first two semesters.
