Carole Bennett enjoys being a leader and a risk-taker. “Even though I am a public school employee, I like to think of myself as having an entrepreneurial spirit,” she says. The Santa Rose Junior College faculty member is convinced “not all students’ needs are met with traditional semester-based classroom method of instruction.”

As dean of planning, research, and development at Sacramento’s American River College, she piloted and developed the ARC Virtual Campus. Offering three classes online through the extension office. Within three months, 400 students were enrolled in the Grant Proposal Writing course.

Now she’s the pioneer for another alternative form of learning using the Internet called CoursesOnline.com in which students take classes via computer to fit their own time and speed. And in her position with Santa Rosa’s Business Office Technology Department, she coordinates an off-site computer instructional facility serving more than 2,000 students per month at a shopping mall.
