CSU Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program

 Program Description

The Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program is designed to increase the diversity of persons qualified to fill instructional faculty positions at campuses of the California State University.  It provides loans to students to complete doctoral study in selected disciplines of particular relevance to the CSU. Doctoral students in the program are sponsored by CSU tenure-track faculty to establish early relationships between CSU academic departments and program participants, to encourage the students during their doctoral studies, and to provide experiences that will stimulate interest in a teaching career in the CSU. A major incentive for loan recipients to seek teaching positions in the CSU is that loans are forgiven at a rate of 20 percent for each year of full-time teaching in the CSU subsequent to completing the doctorate and successfully competing for a faculty position.

HOW TO FIND MONEY FOR GRADUATE SCHOOL

 The Graduate Division at the University of California, Riverside has put together an impressive detailed step by step guide to seeking financial aid on their website:  http://www.graddiv.ucr.edu/Funding.html

*        Student Loans (also called Stafford and Perkins Loans)

*        Parent Loans (also called PLUS)

*        Private Loans (also called Alternative)

*        Loan Consolidation

Grants, scholarships, work-study and other forms of gift aid just do not cover the full cost of a college education. Many students find that they must supplement their savings with government and private loans. The Federal education loan programs offer lower interest ratesand more flexible repayment plans than most consumer loans, making them an attractive way to finance your education.

Education loans come in three major categories: student loans, parent loans and private loans. A fourth type, consolidation loans, allows the borrower to lump all of their loans into one loan for simplified payment.

 The student loan interest rates starting July 1, 2002 will be at the lowest levels ever. The interest rate for Stafford Loans will be 4.06%, down from 5.99%. (The in-school interest rate will be 3.46%.) The interest rate for PLUS loans wil be 4.86%, down from 6.79%. Students who will be graduating or who have already graduated but not yet consolidated their loans should consider consolidating their loans after July 1, 2002 in order to lock in the new low rates.

BEWARE Scholarship Scams

If you have to pay money to get money, it's probably a scam.

Every year, several hundred thousand students and parents are defrauded by scholarship scams. The victims of these scams lose more than $100 million annually. Scam operations often imitate legitimate government agencies, grant-giving foundations, education lenders and scholarship matching services, using official-sounding names containing words like "National," "Federal," "Foundation," or "Administration."

Ford Foundation Pre doctoral Fellowships For Minorities Program

To increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on the nation's college and university faculties, to enhance diversity on campuses, and to address the persisting effects of past discrimination, the Ford Foundation offers predoctoral fellowships to members of six minority groups whose underrepresentation in the professoriate has been severe and long-standing. The fellowship program identifies individuals with demonstrated ability and provides them the opportunity to engage in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree.

Approximately60 predoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The awards will be made to those individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superio scholarship and show the greatest promise for future achievement as scholars, researchers, and teachers in institutions of higher education.
