CLTA Executive Director Reappointed

Dear CLTA members:

Greetings!
On behalf of the CLTA board of directors, I am very pleased to report that Professor Cynthia Ning, University of Hawaii, has accepted reappointment as the Executive Director of CLTA for a second term (2005-2009).
The reappointment follows upon a systematic process where an ED review committee made a recommendation to the Board, and the Board voted unanimously for Professor Ning's reappointment.
As many Board and CLTA members have commented, Professor Ning has done an excellent job for CLTA in the past four years as a "traffic controller" and "a consummate diplomat." She has maintained the CLTA headquarters with thoughtfulness and good humor, and has contributed a great deal to CLTA in its development, professionalism, and continuity. We are grateful for her dedication to CLTA and to our growing and changing field. Professor Ning's organizational experience, administrative skills, and leadership qualities are all extremely valuable to CLTA and to the Board.
We look forward to Professor Ning's leadership and service in the next four years.

The Second CFL Empirical Research Workshop

In order to further promote empirical research in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the Jiede 皆得 Committee, [representing the CLTA Jiēdé  (everyone-attains) Empirical Research Grant established in 2003], is pleased to announce that we will hold another workshop entitled "The Second CFL Empirical Research Workshop" at the 2005 CLTA Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. The workshop will be open to twenty CLTA members and will be held from 8:00 pm to 10:30 pm on Friday, November 18, 2005. All CLTA members who are interested in learning the basic concepts and skills of empirical research in CFL are welcome to attend. The workshop will be conducted by Professor Michael Everson, and is designed for individuals with little or no knowledge of the research process. Professor Everson's compilation of a complete bibliography of empirical studies in our field will be distributed to workshop attendees. We would like to get some sense of how well this endeavor will be received by the CLTA membership. If you are interested in the workshop, please take a short moment to fill out a SURVEY for us (e-mail CUI Songren at and I will send it to you) and then return it to Professor Everson by attachment (michael-everson@uiowa.edu). This will help generate the common topics for the workshop, which will enable us to better meet the needs of our potential attendees. We truly appreciate your cooperation and help. If you are interested in attending this workshop on Nov. 18, please contact Professor Everson (michael-everson@uiowa.edu) by May 5. The charge for the workshop is $50 per person to cover organizational expenses. Please bring your check to the workshop that day and make it out to CLTA. We will provide a receipt for you at the workshop. Thank you very much for your attention. -- Songren Cui, Asian Studies Program Bowdoin College (207)725-3710 Fax: (207)725-3059 scui@bowdoin.edu
