In this workshop, participants will be introduced to a wide range of pragmatic
phenomena in Chinese spoken discourse, and to explanations, activities,
materials, and approaches for the instruction of pragmatics in the CFL
classroom. Workshop activities will include lectures on Chinese pragmatics and
the explicit instruction of pragmatics to CFL learners, as well as model
teaching sessions where pragmatics-focused instruction will be demonstrated.
Additional sessions will address related issues such as providing feedback to
learners, assessing learner performances, and learner reactions to explicit
instruction of pragmatics. The activities during the latter half of the
workshop will focus on the development of instructional materials and
strategies for the explicit instruction of pragmatics in the beginning CFL
classroom.
The workshop will provide an opportunity for anyone, regardless of their experience
with teaching pragmatics, to develop instructional
materials and strategies for introducing pragmatics to CFL learners. Interested
