Mozart's Die ZauberflÖte (The Magic Flute)

Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) is Mozart’s last opera, written in 1791. Conceived in collaboration with the popular Viennese actor Emanuel Schikaneder—who also premiered the role of Papageno—Die Zauberflöte fulfilled Mozart’s lifelong aspiration to popularize opera in his native German language.

The acclaimed Bob Cole Conservatory Opera Institute will perform Magic Flute on the campus of California State University, Long Beach in April. Fully staged performances with orchestra will be sung in German with English supertitles projected above the stage. Dialogue will be performed in English.

We are pleased to welcome as our guest Stage Director, renowned American baritone LeRoy Villanueva who has appeared many times in the role of Papageno. Johannes Müller-Stosch will conduct the Bob Cole Conservatory Chamber Orchestra.

In this production, set in a world reminiscent of sci-fi comics and “b” movies, director Villanueva centers the story around young Tamino and his journey of self-discovery. In a dream, Tamino becomes a Prince to fight his demons. In his dream, he encounters different aspects of himself in the characters Papageno and Monostatos. He struggles to find his place in a battle between the powerful Queen of the Night and the enlightened priest Sarastro in a world symbolic of the conflict between light and darkness, good and evill. With the guidance of Sarastro and the unyielding support of the beautiful Pamina, Tamino finds a deeper understanding of love, life and harmony.

The performances of Magic Flute are Friday, April 11 @ 8pm, Saturday, April 12 at 2pm and 8pm, and Sunday, April 13 at 2pm in the University Theatre at CSULB. Tickets are by reserved seating only, and there is no late seating. Box Office Direct line: 562-985-7000. $25/15 (students with valid ID).
