Initial Consultation

Reaching out for help is not always an easy thing to do – at CAPS we want to make taking that first step as easy as possible.

To schedule your Initial Consultation, just call 562-985-4001 or stop by our office Brotman Hall 226 during business hours and a member of our administrative support team will be happy to assist you.

  1. The morning of your Initial Consultation, you will receive an e-mail from our front desk containing instructions for accessing forms to complete prior to your appointment. Allow about 20 to 30 minutes to complete and submit the forms. Your CAPS Counselor will review all the information you have provided prior to your appointment.
  2. The Initial Consultation session is confidential and will typically be 45 to 50 minutes in length. Your counselor will listen and ask questions to gain an understanding of your primary area of concern. To gain a holistic perspective, your counselor will get to know your unique life experience in order to make recommendations that will best address the reasons you came to CAPS.
  3. At the conclusion of the Initial Consultation, your counselor will discuss treatment options and recommendations.  At CAPS our direct clinical services include brief individual counseling, group counseling, skill-building workshops, and psychiatry. Your counselor will explain which of our services will best address your particular concern.
  4. Sometimes students need support that is beyond the scope of what CAPS can provide, and your counselor will let you know if a community referral would be your best option. When needed, CAPS offers case management to help students connect with providers and resources on and off campus.

If you believe you might benefit from what CAPS has to offer, we encourage you to take that first step and schedule an Initial Consultation.
