The Narrative
For this assignment you will be writing a 3-5 page paper using description and a mode known as the narrative. Assignment 1: For this essay assignment you will be writing a descriptive essay using the first person or what is called a narrative. You may choose your topic on your own or use one from our class brainstorming exercise. The essay should include concrete specific details that appeal to one or more of the five senses - sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. In addition, narration usually includes answers to the following questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to build skills in the use of specifics and details, and analyzing the significance of those items. With this assignment you will begin seeing, thinking, and reading as a writer. These ideas may seem a little daunting at first, but relax and have fun. Relevant Readings and Activities:
Hints for writing your essay: I want you to be creative and imaginative, to explore, and even take some risks. The essay may be serious or you may choose to amuse your audience. The choice is yours, but remember your audience. Things to consider . . . Remember that others will read your work so dont write about anything that you dont want to share or that might offend others. Be consistent - whatever audience you choose, stick with it. Watch tone and diction. Details - remember to use lots of relevant details in describing your subject. Your essay should be about 3 to 4 pages, typed, double-spaced, with standard 1" margins all around, and a 12-point font size max. |
