Nancy Jo Smith has created costumes for Theatre, Dance, Ice-Skating, Stunt Shows and TV. During that time, she worked across the United States in various venues, including Shakespeare festivals, Regional Theatres, Sound Stages, Theme Parks and Ice Rinks. She has received numerous honors and awards in design including Drama-Logue (Merlin, Cal Rep; Little Foxes, San Diego Gaslamp; and Red Noses, San Diego Rep) Critics Circle (Children’s Show, La Jolla Playhouse) , and Themed Entertainment (World Rhythms on Ice, SeaWorld and Waterworld, Universal Studios) for excellence in costume design.
Nancy Jo’s costume design is identified by her creation of the fabric for the costumes through dyeing, printing, discharging and otherwise manipulating the fabric surface. Her work in color and texture is an integral part of her design. In 1999, Nancy Jo took her experience in theatre and fabric into the fiber art arena and has created a line of both fine and wearable art working as Doshi, which she continues to produce and evolve. Her work has been featured in Ornament, Fiber Arts, and Surface Design magazines.
Nancy Jo heads the costume area, supervising the undergraduate and graduate programs in costume, teaching courses in costume design, patterning, tailoring, costume crafts, and dyeing.
