Workforce Simulations

The T-HELP prorgram (Januray 2019 – December 2020) has ended. You may contact Dr. Christine Costa (PI) from the CSULB School or Nursing at Christine.Costa@csulb.edu if you have questions about this program.

Simulation is a powerful pedagogical tool for simultaneously teaching knowledge, skills and attitudes to psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) students. This educational approach provides individualized and instantaneous clinical feedback to the student from faculty, allowing students to develop necessary clinical skills and principles needed to safely and effectively provide care. Incorporating simulation into advanced-practice psychiatric–mental health nursing curriculum can be used to ensure that students have opportunities to participate in complex decision-making scenarios, which can be evaluated in supervised settings, that may not occur in the clinical setting. As a result, simulated clinical experiences provide opportunities to ensure experiences with specific diagnoses, problems, types of patients, and situations, that are frequently seen in a practice, but cannot be guaranteed during clinical rotations. Simulated experiences in the PMHNP curriculum provide opportunities for safe practice to expand the student’s clinical experience.

Kognito (Mental Health Situations Simulator)

Kognito
Kognito is interactive simulation software used to improve participants skills in dealing with mental health situations. This behavior change model integrates several evidence-based models and techniques, game mechanics, and learning principles. In the simulations, users enter a virtual environment and engage in role-play conversations with emotionally-responsive virtual humans. Through practice and receiving personalized feedback, users learn and assess their competency to lead similar conversations in real life. Key models and techniques include motivational interviewing, shared decision-making, emotional self-regulation, empathy, empathic accuracy, and reappraisal strategy. Key learning and assessment principles include hands-on-practice, contextual learning, personalized feedback, storytelling, and case-based approach.

Before you access Kognito, please disable pop-up blocker on your browser. Kognito may not work properly with pop-up blocker enabled. Chrome is the preferred browser but it should work with all browsers if pop-ups are allowed.

  • Chrome: Preferences – Advanced (on the left menu) – Privacy & Security – Site Settings (at the bottom of the menu) – Pop-Ups and Redirects – Allow all or add: "https://kognitocampus.com/"
  • Internet Explorer: Tools – Internet options – Privacy tab – Pop-up Blocker – Select or clear the Turn on Pop-up Blocker check box, and then select OK.
  • Edge: More button in the top right (the one with the three dots) – Settings – View Advanced Settings – Click the slider under the heading that says "Block pop-ups"
  • Safari option #1: Preferences – Websites – Pop-Up Block – Select Allow all slider on the bottom right
  • Safari option #2: Preferences – Security tab – ensure Block pop-up windows option is not checked

Please create a Kognito account at the button/link below. Make sure to write down your username and password. The simulation may be completed in multiple settings and your progress will be saved. You will not be locked out of your account through multiple failed attempts so if you can't get back into your account, it is likely because you are using a different username or password. If you have login issues, please contact Kognito Support or call 646.923.8632.

Once logged in, use the enrollment key password given to you to access your approved simulation. Each simulation has a different password or key. You may have been given access to one or multiple simulations. You will pass with a score of 80% but you can retake the simluations to achieve 100%. The simulation will not prompt you to retake until after completing the simulation. After completion, click the "need to recertify" link to start the simulation again. Please contact Alex Garbanati if you have any non-login issues or questions about Kognito.
