High School Equivalency Test (HiSET)

The purpose of the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) is to certify a candidate's attainment of academic knowledge and skills equivalent to those of a high school graduate. This program, therefore, allows candidates to earn a high school equivalency credential.

The HiSET program is available in English or Spanish in both paper-based and computer-based format.

The exam consist of five subtest in five core areas:

  • Language Arts - Reading (65mins)
  • Language Arts - Writing (120 mins)
  • Mathematics (90 mins)
  • Science (80 mins)
  • Social Studies (70 mins)

 

  • $20 - State Fee first time test takers (one-time fee)
  • $17 - Per Subtest (Paper-based format)
  • $17 - Per Subtest (Computer-based format)
  • Note: In the year of first test attempt of each subtest, there is up to two additional attempts included in subtest fee.
  • $25 -Test Center Fee per Subtest
  • $25 - Retest Test Center fee per Subtest

Before you register, pay and schedule an appointment at our campus, examinees must create a HiSET account. To create your My HiSET account, visit HiSet website. After successfully creating your HiSET account, you will receive an ETS ID Number. Examinees must refer to the HiSET Bulletin to obtain detailed important information about the HiSET exam.

Note: Before proceeding with registration and you are uncertain about the total test fees, please email HiSET-Testing@csulb.edu include your ETS ID Number, First Name & Last Name. Your payment amount will get confirm with the HiSET program.

When you are ready to take the test, you can complete the Online Registration and Payment at our campus by selecting "CSULB HiSET Online Registration". Students must have an ETS ID Number to proceed with registration.

After completing your online registration, please email HiSET-Testing@csulb.edu to schedule an appointment to take the HiSET. Please include your ETS ID Number, First Name & Last Name and the date and time that you would like to test.

Testing appointments are based on time and room availability. There is NO guarantee that you will get the date you request, other programs in the Testing Department may supersede available spaces. Advance notice (a month in advance) may make it easier to get a more preferable time and date.

Once you schedule an appointment, you will receive an email with all test details. The email specifies the test date, time, and room assignment. If examinees do not receive an email within two days, please contact the Testing Department at 562.985.4007 for their room assignment and further instructions.

Examinees are eligible for a full refund of their subtest fee ($10 per Subtest) if they cancel by 11:59 p.m. local time the day before their scheduled appointment.
Any fees that were paid to the state ($20 State Fee first time test takers/one-time fee) or test center ($25 Test Center Fee or Retest Test Center Fee per Subtest) are nonrefundable.

To reschedule your testing appointment, please email HiSET-Testing@csulb.edu at least two business days prior to scheduled test date to avoid additional charges. Testing appointment must be reschedule within six months from scheduled test date.
Examinees will not receive a refund for rescheduling their appointment since they are still going to take the exam.

Please be sure to arrive 15 minutes prior your reporting time. If you arrive late, you will not be admitted into the testing room and your test fees will not be refunded and/or rescheduled.

You must provide an acceptable and valid ID as required by your state or jurisdiction, please visit HiSets website . Students will not be admitted into the room without proper identification. When checking in, you will be ask for identification. Your ID must include:

  1. Your name exactly as it is entered on your profile you created in your HiSET account
  2. Your signature
  3. Your date of birth
  4. A recent, recognizable photograph
  5. Address

A second valid ID may be requested of any examinee.

Disability Accommodations
Accommodations are available for test takers with disabilities or health-related needs. Accommodations must be requested and granted through ETS before scheduling an appointment to take the HiSET exam. A parking permit is required on campus at all times. Upon arrival to campus, be prepared to purchase a daily parking permit. Your license plate number (or VIN) is required to purchase a permit.
