A Message From Provost Jersky

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of hosting, along with BUILD, CSULB’s first ever Diverse Faculty Retreat in Lake Arrowhead. Over 75 chairs, staff and administrators came together for three days to listen, plan and dream innovative ways to increase faculty diversity on our campus.

We heard from speakers from different campuses on how they successfully implemented their plans on this topic. Although I found them to be knowledgeable, what I was most impressed with was the collective passion our campus had as we worked to come up with our own ideas.

Each group tackled tough topics that are perceived barriers for faculty diversity. They looked outside our normal standard, traditional ways, and came up with several plans for our campus and colleges. What was most exciting was how some of these ideas could easily be adopted right now.  They also organized ideas for what could be integrated after a year as well as several options for us to consider down the road.  All the attendees helped us envision new ideas to enhance our faculty diversity.

I came to the retreat believing we had an extraordinarily difficult challenge in accomplishing our goals, but I left feeling renewed, hopeful and recharged. Our campus faculty and staff are remarkable. I am so appreciative of each person that gave up part of their week to work towards a bigger dream of a diverse university.

This fresh, inclusive perspective is exactly what is needed right now not only on our campus, but in our community, region and nation.

Imagine – Beach 2030

I am sure you have become familiar with what is happening today. If you are still on the fence about participating, know that your thoughts matter. As I have stated before, this is an opportunity to hear everyone’s voice - just 10 – 15 minutes (or more) of your time can help us capture what you want for our future.

In case you have more questions – here is a "how to play" tutorial.

We also have several topics that will be featured at different times – these are called challenges. This input came from all divisions and departments to create relevant topics to be discussed. Here is the full list: Schedule of Challenges. See a topic of interest? Join the conversation during that challenge time.

For those that missed my “Is CSULB Future Ready” webinar, we had a lively discussion that covered many topics that are timely to Imagine.  Thank you to all the attendees, panelists and moderators for participating in the webinar. We had over 90 people listening and commenting.

Lastly, I will be posting on my Twitter and Instagram @provost_jersky and Facebook page @CSULBAcademicAffairs on both days to show what is happening around campus during Imagine.

I am looking forward to this time together.

Please join me in this conversation for our future,

Brian Jersky
Provost and Senior Vice President
